2007 Meeting of the Association des Séguin d’Amérique
August 24, 25 and 26, 2007 in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts QC
The bylaws of the Association des Séguin require that a general meeting be held annually. This year, the meeting took place in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, located in the heart of our magnificent Laurentians. The Séguins met at La Calèche, a place well known and appreciated by many groups.
The meeting was held from the afternoon of August 24 to 26. It is interesting to meet Séguin who come from Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and some American states of Connecticut, Delaware and Vermont. These Séguins are happy to make contact with their parents' country. Helping "L’heure joyeuse", the Séguins quickly loosen their tongue.
As in conventions, at the annual meeting, the Séguins are serious about the general meeting, but also like to have fun. The first evening takes place at the Le Patriote theater. We present "Tiens ça mort" In the presence of actors like Michel Dumont and Claude Michaud, we cannot be bored. The comic situations and the puns follow one another without interruption. Who can't laugh?
On Saturday evening, we were amazed by the spectacle of twins David and Michel Leblanc. Eh yes! They are really twins and in addition identical twins. Even as they approach their forties, it's hard to tell them apart. David, pianist, and Michel, singer, get along wonderfully not only in concert but also in everyday life. Imagine the tricks they played at school. Between chants we are treated to a few revelations and I doubt we haven't had the sweetest tricks. Thanks to the lyrics we had in front of us, we were able to sing most of the songs. Thanks, the twins; you gave us exceptional moments.
Enough of the fun, it's time to get serious. The general meeting takes place on Saturday afternoon. The president, Pierre-Paul Séguin # 368, first welcomed the Séguins and asked for a minute's silence for the deceased members. The minutes from last year will appear in the December Séguinière.
Throughout this weekend, we felt a huge void: Raymond Séguin # 002, our treasurer, was held in hospital. He was the one who saw that everything was going well. All the same, he had had time to write the report which appeared in La Séguinière in June. It will be read by Pierre-Paul Séguin. Before presenting this report, the President delivers the message from Treasurer Raymond Séguin:
"I cannot present the Association's financial statements for this seventeenth year to you, as I have been hospitalized for two months. So I was forced to cease all my activities within the association. "
I would like to thank all the members of the board of directors and of the journal committee with whom I have worked during these seventeen years as well as the active members including some who remain distant like René Séguin from Florida, Cécile Séguin Tyl from Connecticut and Tom Ladéroute from New Brunswick.
I also want to thank you all, you who have allowed me to live seventeen beautiful years in the association. Remember the first trip to France where we visited the Seguin distillery, the Château de Seguin without forgetting the sumptuous reception of Philippe Séguin then President of the National Assembly, the 320th wedding anniversary of François Séguin and Jeanne Petit in Boucherville, the fifth gathering in Hawkesbury and that of Les Cèdres where the Suroît choir came out of the church singing while heading towards the river to attend the parade of illuminated boats; near the river, the choir sang songs for the occasion.
I hope to be able to attend the next rallies. "
Since our regulations are over fifteen years old, it is time to modernize a few. As members have the right to speak, they take the opportunity to express their opinion. Raymond J. # 003, the moderator is doing very well.
Another notable absence is that of our genealogist André Séguin # 006, also detained at the hospital. Need I remind you that he was the one who designed the two genealogical dictionaries of the Séguins. We wish you back soon.
Pauline Séguin # 034, on behalf of La Séguinière, demonstrated to Séguin the importance of our newspaper. We are, she says, constantly on the lookout for various articles relating to the Séguins.
Three board members resigned after giving the best of themselves to the association. They are: Jeanne d’Arc Séguin Plattner # 741, Jacqueline Séguin # 012 and Raymond J. Séguin # 003. Jacqueline and Raymond J. promise to help the association in another way.
Fortunately, four other members are added to the board: Lucette Séguin # 1060 from Saint-Jérôme, Dolorèse Séguin Deschamps # 527 from Ottawa, Louise Louis-Seize # 1078 from Gatineau and Lucette Séguin-De Gagné # 414 from Montreal.
Our association has a new president in the person of Nicole Séguin # 253 of Trois-Rivières: a dynamic Séguin who will give new impetus to the Association des Séguin. A renewed association is a sign of vitality. Thank you ladies. We wish you long life with us.
We would like to thank Jacqueline Séguin # 012 and Bernard Séguin # 340 for their know-how and the time they devoted to the organization of this meeting. The Séguins are grateful to you. These meetings are very important for the life of the association. We look forward to seeing many of you next year at ...
