1999 Meeting of the Association des Séguin d’Amérique
July 27, 1997 in St-Albert ON
The annual reunion is an important event that the Séguin look forward to. Each year they discover new knowledge and figures. The family is constantly growing.
This year the meeting was held on July 27 in Ontario, St. Albert, Russell County. This community is located halfway between Ottawa and Cornwall. This rural municipality has the most beautiful land in Southeastern Ontario. The dairy industry is flourishing there thanks to the St-Albert cheese factory. The Rit parish, founded in 1878, is more than 90 percent French-speaking. A quick glance shows us that prosperity reigns in this part of the country.
As it is Sunday, it is normal for the Séguins to go to meditate and give thanks to the Lord at the church of Saint-Albert. The officiant, Father Gérard-Georges Séguin # 390, retired priest, is interim parish priest in this parish, Monsignor is doing him a service by entrusting him with this work, because I do not see this man so active in the process of resting, He celebrates mass with Father Édouard Séguin csv # 144 and deacon Gaston Rousselle. The celebration is hosted by Monique Séguin and her daughter Manon de L'orignal. It was surprising to hear Manon, eleven years old, singing so confidently.
When we hear the name St-Albert, an image comes to mind: the cheese factory. Who hasn't eaten St-Albert cheese one day? Many Séguins take advantage of their stay to visit the cheese factory and stock up on cheese. It is interesting to note that nothing is lost of the collected milk. Only 1/10 of the milk Used to make cheese. Another tiny fraction will be used in the production of butter and the whey will go to another factory and be used for other purposes.
During this time, Yolande Poulin, representative of the Groupe Voyages Québec agency, distributes the documentation to the Séguins who will be traveling to France in September. So she takes the opportunity to give valuable advice and answer various questions.
A very hearty brunch is served by the Cuisine Maison de St-Bernardin. All seem satisfied.
Even if some activities are organized, the primary purpose of the meeting is without a doubt the general meeting. First Raymond Séguin # 002, our treasurer, presents the financial statements which always end with a positive balance. The Nominations Committee recommends the reappointment of Lionel Séguin # 038, André Séguin # 261, Laurier Séguin # 083, Pierre-Paul Séguin # 368 and Marcel-H. Séguin # 513. No other candidacy is proposed. The President gave some explanations of the changes to the Association's bylaws.
Finally, our renowned genealogist, André Séguin # 006, gives us a remarkable lecture on genealogy.
In his conference, he answers many questions that the Séguins ask themselves. He also asks us to send him all the information collected on our families for the preparation of the famous dictionary of the Séguins.
We would like to thank Michel Séguin # 450 and his team for the excellent organization of the meeting.
The day has passed too quickly. We would like to extend such meetings, but we have one consolation, we know a year in advance that the next meeting will take place in Sudbury and, rest assured, the Séguins of the Sudbury region are happy to welcome us.
Goodbye.
